Amazon Theatre: A-list actors, product placement, real budgets...not your average short films.

See "Portrait" at Amazon Theater @ www.amazon.com
Amazon.com has entered into the short-film game. Ordinarily, I would think this is a good thing, but as an actor trying to make a name for himself and get work, I'm troubled that they seem to be going the route of using name actors.
On the business side, I can see the appeal of using name actors...obviously name actors sell, but will Amazon really see an increase in traffic because of this? I doubt it. I think they would have done better to launch NEW films written by NEW writers made by NEW directors with NEW actors in them. Amazon has grown by being innovators and now they're taking the easy (albeit more expensive) route.
I will say that there listing the product placement items in the credit with the actors is rather unique and may help them plant gift ideas in the minds of visitors to their site. If it works, they will probably have to consider upgrading the script standards. You'll notice that the story is a bit thin and basic and you can predict just about everything that happens, but it LOOKS great!
